SCMS March 26th Foray Delayed One Week

Foray leader  today (Wednesday) checked the planned foray location and has determined that the conditions are not right yet. Therefore, this Saturday's foray has been moved by a week and instead will be held on Saturday April 2nd. Check your newsletter for all other information about this foray, the only change is the date going from  Saturday March 26th to April 2nd.

  1. Here's a foray report for the next membership meeting that I won't be able to attend:

The rain didn't discourage 8 members who showed up to hunt for verpa bohemica on April 16th. Actually the weather improved and although the woodlands were wet, the rain had stopped. Conditions: Cottonwoods not leafing yet, only 2 trillium spotted, temp 46.

Results: 1 Gyromitra esculenta about 2"
    1 polypore about 5"
1 hygrophorus family; about 1 1/2" red waxy umbilicate cap. No gills evident (?), growing on a dead stick, underside of cap and stipe are cream color.
1 small mandible and skull piece (dog?) (coyote?)
    0 verpa

Wouldn't you know, Hildegard from PSMS came by and told us we were at too high an elevation (900') and that verpa were being found lower down at about 300'.

Sam Ingram reported that 4 days prior he found 50 verpa and some starting morels at Rockport.

Jerry Thompson reported that he had picked a basket full of verpa along the Skagit River. I don't know how far up the river he went but he said he used $26 of gas from Costco he bought just before the hunt and replaced afterwards. He has a picture of some good looking verpa in that basket.
